I wanted to share insight into a framework I have been exploring, which includes, The Chinese Medicine Body Clock, often referred to as the “organs’ clock,” and how I believe it aligns with the concept of circadian rhythms in a fascinating way. Both systems emphasise the importance of timing in relation to physical and emotional health, underscoring how our bodies function best at certain times of the day.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), each organ is believed to have a peak energy time during a 24-hour cycle. Here’s a simplified breakdown:
– Liver (1 AM – 3 AM): This is a time for detoxification. According to TCM, the liver is at its peak during these hours, promoting cleansing and renewal.
– Lungs (3 AM – 5 AM): Associated with the respiratory system, this time is beneficial for breathing exercises and meditation the early morning sunlight on our skin and eyes.
– Large Intestine (5 AM – 7 AM): A crucial time for elimination. This is when your body naturally tends to wake up and expel waste.
– Stomach (7 AM – 9 AM): The best time for nourishment. Having a hearty breakfast is encouraged during this time.
– Spleen (9 AM – 11 AM): The body is primed for digestion and absorbing nutrients.
– Heart (11 AM – 1 PM): Emotional health is emphasised here. It’s a time to connect socially and manage stress.
– Small Intestine (1 PM – 3 PM): The body processes nutrients. It’s a good time to rest and avoid heavy meals.
– Bladder (3 PM – 5 PM): A time for physical activity. It’s when energy peaks, making it ideal for exercise.
– Kidneys (5 PM – 7 PM): This is a time for winding down. Nurturing activities should be prioritised.
– Pericardium (7 PM – 9 PM): A time for emotional connection and relaxation.
– Triple Heater (9 PM – 11 PM): The body prepares for sleep. Engage in calming activities to wind down.
– Gallbladder (11 PM – 1 AM): The body cleanses and prepares for the new day.
I have been exploring the concepts of biochemistry, light, and physics, which might seem like an ambitious task, but at their core, these fields interconnect through the principles of energy transformation and the functioning of living systems, something we simply are. I must, as a middle-aged woman with a toddler in toe, working, amongst having other responsibilities, enjoying the benefits of this exploration.

- Light:Both melanin and melatonin are influenced by light. The connection between these and photovoltaics may seem unconventional, but we can explore it as a metaphor for understanding how light influences our biological rhythms and emotional well-being.
